Fortaleza museums and sights
Most people visit Fortaleza for the sun and the beach. But there's more than that. Fortaleza, a fishing port, offers a considerable amount of museums and cultural centres. The museums and the former colonial buildings show the Fortaleza history. Walking in Fortaleza is like you're visiting an open-air museum, many of the buildings are from the 17th century. Most buildings are free of charge entering f.e. the 18th Century Palacio do Luz, Praca dos Leoes (Lions Square) is a beautiful building open to the public. An example of a culture museum is the Museum of Folk Art and Culture (housing in The Centro de Turismo do Estado (state tourism center)) with some wonderfully colorful artefacts. Inside the centre you'll find a lot of little shops that show and sell locally-produced arts and handmade crafts. Another example is the Jose de Alancar theatre on Praca Jose de Alancar with an art gallery that has temporary and permanent shows.
